Burgas has won the Best City to Live in Bulgaria award three times. Burgas is the fourth most populous city in Bulgaria, with a population of over 300,000.
Location
Burgas is located on Bulgaria's southern Black Sea coast on the shores of the bay of the same name. The resort towns of Pomorie and Sozopol. Climate

Burgas has a humid subtropical climate with maritime and continental influences. The warmest month in Burgas is July, with an average air temperature of 22.7°C. The average sea temperature in May is 15.7°C, rising to 21.6°C in June, and the warmest sea temperature in August is 24.9°C.  

Transportation

You can get to Burgas by any means of transportation. By plane, Burgas has its own airport. Airport entry costs 2 euros. You can also get to Burgas by train; there's a train station. You can also get to Burgas by bus; the bus station serves buses from many countries.

Burgas has well-developed public transportation, including buses and trolleybuses. A standard city ticket, purchased directly on the bus, costs 75 cents. The city also offers electronic 45-minute tickets, which cost 60 cents. Burgas Sofia A highway connects the two cities, allowing you to reach Sofia in 3.5 hours. Istanbul is 330 km away, and the journey takes 4.5 hours. Taxis are relatively cheap in the city. The city is divided into parking zones: Blue and Green. Parking costs 0.50 cents. Payment can be made via SMS or at a parking meter. Paid parking is open from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

What about housing in Burgas? What are the prices? New housing is being built in Burgas. Rents for a one-bedroom apartment start at €100, with the average price being around €200 per month. Rents for a two-bedroom apartment also start at €100, with the average price being around €200 per month.

I'd like to point out that these prices are for long-term rentals. In Bulgaria, a long-term rental is defined as a lease agreement of at least one year. If the lease is terminated early, the landlord retains the deposit. Early termination requires one month's notice. 

Apartment prices start from 30,000 euros. A one-room apartment can be purchased for 60,000 euros.

We would like to add that due to the war in Ukraine, the supply on the real estate market has significantly decreased, while prices have risen, albeit slightly.

Economy (salaries and standard of living)

According to the most recent data, the average monthly salary in Burgas is 1,343 leva before taxes and fees. By comparison, in Sofia it is 2,298 leva, and in Varna 1514 leva. The unemployment rate in Burgas is 4.81 TP3T, in Sofia 3.31 TP3T, in Varna 4.11 TP3T. 

Crime

The crime rate per 1,000 people in Burgas in 2020 was 2.5. For comparison, in Sofia it was 1.7, and in Varna it was 2.5.

Medicine

According to the latest data, the ratio of people per doctor in medical institutions in Burgas is 300. In Sofia, it's 180, and in Varna, 196. Most residents note that the quality of healthcare is acceptable.

Infrastructure

Municipal expenses per person living in Burgas amount to 1021 leva, in Sofia such expenses amount to 1020, and in Varna 1062 leva. 

Culture and attractions

Burgas is not the country's main tourist center, but its convenient location near lakes and historic towns attracts tourists.

Burgas has Ethnographic, Archaeological, Historical and Natural Science Museums, numerous exhibition venues and interesting natural attractions in the surrounding area.

The city's calling card is Aleksandrovskaya Street, a pedestrian area in the city center. A stroll through the city allows you to get a feel for the architecture, browse small souvenir shops, and enjoy a cup of coffee on the terrace of a cozy restaurant. 

If you can't imagine your life without shopping, then you should visit the huge Mall Galleria. We visited it. It's a typical shopping center with a standard selection of stores and establishments.

The city also has another shopping complex, Burgas Plaza, which offers several floors of shopping and entertainment for the whole family.

Aviation Museum Located on the grounds of Burgas Airport, the exhibition was founded in 1998. It features airplanes and helicopters from agricultural, civil, and military aviation. Some exhibits feature accessible cockpits where you can sit in the pilot's seat. The exhibition also features interesting items and essential aviation accessories, such as pilot uniforms, parachutes, photographs, an actual airplane black box, and navigation instruments.

Burgas Mineral Baths. The resort is located in close proximity to the village of Vetren (Burgas region) and is known as a balneological center of national importance. The mineral water has a temperature of approximately 41 degrees Celsius.

Island of Light Anastasia

The earliest recorded human presence on the island dates back to the 4th–6th centuries. From 1945 to 1990, the island was known as Bolshevik. 

Burgas is a unique place for every bird lover. The city is located on one of the busiest bird migration routes in Europe, the Via Pontica. It is the only region in Bulgaria with three large reservoirs: Lake Atanasovsko, Lake Burgas (Vaya), and the Mandre complex. With their varied nature and supersaline, semisaline, and freshwater, along with the sea, they provide a variety of ecological conditions and suitable habitats for a large number of birds, many of which are endangered.

Sea Garden 

The Sea Garden is the largest park in Burgas. Its construction began in the early 20th century.

Pier or bridge.

The debate over what exactly the "Bridge" is and what it should be called is mostly among people who didn't grow up in Burgas. For Burgas residents, it's a place where you can touch and feel the sea, even on cold winter days when the waves are big and dark. Strolls in the Sea Garden and on the bridge are part of everyday life for Burgas residents. Everyone has their own way of enjoying themselves there. The promenade along the beach is filled with small restaurants, alleys, and diverse vegetation offer both beautiful views of Burgas Bay and the tranquility of gazebos sheltered from the wind. 

The Summer Theater is the center of cultural events during the summer. The park's green spaces are an open-air museum of sculptures, the result of plein-air painting sessions held in the city many years ago.

Burgas Lighthouse

The public area of the Burgas port was opened in 2014 as part of a campaign to open the city to the sea. Today, it houses administrative and public buildings, restaurants, a playground, and areas for walking and recreation. The lighthouse is part of this area and is freely accessible. The Burgas lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Bulgaria and was commissioned by a French company.

Conclusions

The overall layout of Burgas is very similar to its rival Varna: it features a seaside park, a port, a marina, and a pedestrian street. However, the execution of the details in Burgas is quite different, and the city has a distinct atmosphere. The resort is also ideal for those who enjoy cultural events: exhibitions, galleries, and festivals.
